During the exciting tour of the electric arc furnace and the continuous casting plant of Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, Verbund.NRW PhD students gained informative insights into the production of liquid crude steel and the continuous casting of crude steel into square bars.

After the guided tour of the steelworks and a small snack, there was an exchange on the topics of the college as well as first insights into the test campaign (https://www.teer.rwth-aachen.de/go/id/zyssy?#aaaaaaaaabaeant) that TEER carried out together with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing at the beginning of February. This involved investigating the use of carbon fibre-containing residual material fractions as reducing agents in various melts in a pilot-scale electric arc furnace.

Georgsmarienhütte GmbH is a leading supplier of bar steel and crude steel made of quality and engineering steels in Europe. Our thanks go to Dr Manuel Foppe, head of the steelworks, for the interesting tour and the discussion afterwards.
