According to a press release of the Ministry of Culture and Science dated July 13, 2020, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is providing eleven million euros for the continuation of five research colleges.

After receiving three positive reviews, Verbund.NRW continues with a second funding phase starting in January 2021 for three and a half years supporting eleven PhD students. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia will provide the research training group with approximately 2.2 million euros. The research training group ACCESS! will also continue to receive funding.

An expert jury headed by Prof. Dr. Armin Grunwald, head of the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and head of the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag evaluated the six research colleges launched in 2016 and recommended five of them for further funding.

In the NRW research colleges, PhD students conduct interdisciplinary research on innovative and future-oriented topics such as IT security or sustainable mobility.
